Colors of Havanese and Color Change

Havanese sometimes change colors as they mature.  And sometimes they don't.  The reason for this color change, or not, is due to genetics.

For example, take a look below at how Maggie's color changed from birth to six months.  Maggie is a Red Sable Pied.  Tizzie, on the other hand, is a Black Irish Pied and her color has never changed.  (The term "Pied" is a designation of the pattern of color and white.)

Any color of Havanese is eligible to be shown in AKC conformation except for blue.  True chocolate Havs may be shown as long as their pigmented areas (lips, nose, eye rims) are not black (they are more chocolate to liver colored).  All other Havanese, regardless of color, must have black pigmented areas.

When you start your search for your new Havanese puppy, it is important to remember that what you see at eight weeks of age may not be the color(s) you will see at a year.  Therefore, a reputable breeder will help you focus your search on personality and size of the puppy so that your new puppy will be a better "match" with your lifestyle than your sofa.
