Who we are

At Compo Havanese, our overarching responsibility to the breed is to raise happy and healthy Havanese.  We breed for conformation and temperament, true to the Havanese standard.  Our dogs receive health-testing at the appropriate intervals .    As a small hobby breeder, we only have puppies occasionally.  Our Havanese are AKC registered.

First and foremost, our Havanese are our pets.  As such, they accompany us nearly everywhere, sleep in our beds (although we do insist upon crate training for the first year), watch TV with us, garden with us and are an integral part of the family.  We spend lots of time training our dogs and will work with Tizzie this year to achieve her Therapy Dog Certification.  We wouldn't have it any other way!

What's A Havanese?

The Havanese is the AKC's 142nd breed.

The Havanese is the National Dog of Cuba and that country's only native breed.  Despite being a newer breed to the AKC, the Havanese has been around for centuries.  It is  descended from dogs brought to Cuba by Spanish settlers, notably the Dog of Tenerife, the same ancestor as the entire Bichon family of dogs.

At various times in its history, the Havanese was known as the  Spanish Silk Poodle or the Havana Silk Dog.  Today, however, the AKC breed is simply called "the Havanese."
